Dr. Ricardo Emanuel Gonzales from ProCardio 21 spoke about cardio health at the June 23 weekly CSRC meeting in Chapala.

Their plan is to make Chapala the first city to be Cardio-Protected, meaning that people have the ability to reach a person having a heart attack within 3 to 5 minutes and to render appropriate life-saving measures.

Every two minutes someone dies in Mexico from a heart attack, and a defibrillator can save 90% of those having an attack. Chapala has a population of about 49,000, and 290 people have heart disease. Their organization trains staff to give CPR and use a defibrillator. At a stage 4 certification level there would be two trained people each shift on the staff of major facilities.

The law states that when a gathering or public facility has over 500 people they need to have a defibrillator available.  Pro Cardio 21 want to have them in many locations:  hotels, restaurants, government offices, etc. In the future, drones could deliver a defibrillator which would come with full instructions on use. There are new pacemakers that can tell a doctor what is going on or deliver a shock when needed.

The ‘smart’ defibrillator they use costs about 40,000 pesos.
