On May 5, Jack West was the guest speaker at the weekly CSRC meeting in Chapala.

Jack told the group about his years developing a large corporation which produces all types of classroom educational materials for schools around the world today. It started when his native Canada went to the metric system in the early 70s. At that time, virtually no metric rulers were available to teachers there, so that became one of their first products.

With a variety of his company’s products in hand, he made the point that people learn best by doing, rather than just reading or listening. All of the products are designed to make abstract concepts – like fractions or the relationships between volume and mass – more tangible and understandable to students, especially elementary-school children.

The company, which he sold some years ago, sells its products in many countries in Central America and around the world except, ironically, in Mexico, where the government education authorities still have shown little interest in this type of product.

Though retired, Jack still retains a passion for helping teachers in their work.
